Owner: Jim Boyer, Illinois
His AKC handle will be Kwick Draw McGraw with a call name of "Gunny". Gunny was the nickname of a grizzled, old Swede who was the stable hand at my father-in-law's horse farm in the early 60's. He used to work all day (kind of), and then spend a good portion of the night standing in front of the barn, looking up at the moon and telling the world off. Of course his arguments were enhanced by a bit of the brew, but "man" could he chew people out. I can still hear him rambling on with his finger pointing to the heavens while staggering around on those old legs. For a stable worker.....at times he wasn't very stable. What a neat, old character he was. So Gunny (the "Swede"), if you're up there looking down, this pup is for you.

The New Pup
Remembering your partners that came before
Helps you anticipate what's in store
Hide the shoes and prep the pen
It's time to start all over again
You remind yourself that you can't compare
To any new pup it wouldn't be fair
That's not to take away your sense of pride
For they served you well until the day they died
The breeder greets you with a shake of the hand
And you tell yourself to stick to the plan
Then reality strikes and you become confused
With that many pups it'll be hard to choose.
You regain your senses & start right in
Separating the sexes is were to begin
Sharp puppy teeth and energy galore
They're easily distracted but soon back for more
You look to the left and one catches your eye
There's something about her as she strolls on by
While staying unbiased to her litter mates
You closely observe her instinctive traits
You soon decide to take her out
Just to see if she'll whimper and pout.
To your surprise she doesn't miss a beat
She looks right up and sits at your feet.
A sense of peace for your search is through
With a look from the pup that says "I choose you".
You know to well that your works just begun
But the reward you'll receive is the years of fun.
